International prize for research in Germany
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is expanding its funding opportunities as part of the 1,000 Heads Plus Program financed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR). With the new Humboldt Research Professorship program initiative, it is creating new opportunities to fill internationally competitive research topics with excellent scientists in Germany and to structurally expand research
The new Humboldt Research Professorships enable top researchers from abroad to carry out their innovative and creative research activities in Germany and establish them firmly at German universities and research institutions without having to give up their positions abroad. Host institutions are given flexible options for integration and institutional anchoring, for example through models of shared professorships or lab-to-lab professorships. The award winners are expected to initiate collaborations with colleagues in Germany, establish and lead an international working group in Germany, and develop other creative and promising research formats that best suit their research interests and working methods.
During the funding period, Humboldt Research Professors can continue their own professorship or working group in their country of origin in parallel. At the same time, a move to Germany is also possible. Longer-term prospects for staying can be negotiated locally on a case-by-case basis.
The prize money is usually 1.5 million euros for researchers working in theory and 3 million euros for researchers working in experimentation. It is available for a period of five years and is used to finance the research of the funded individuals. Up to €10,000 per month can be withdrawn for personal income to cover living expenses during research stays in Germany.
The host institution in Germany receives an administrative fee of 20% of the prize money. In the event of a longer-term stay in Germany, for example due to an appointment to a permanent professorship or a comparable lifetime position, the prize money can be increased by up to €500,000 and the funding period extended by one year under certain conditions at the request of the host institution.
