Paper of the month
The monthly “Paper of the Month” award, funded as part of the medical faculty’s internal bonus program through a grant from the relevant ministry of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, is intended to recognize outstanding publications from the faculty. The aim is to take into account the diversity of research achievements and, in particular, to honor those publications whose exceptional quality cannot be adequately reflected by quantitative evaluation criteria—especially the Journal Impact Factor (JIF). (A high impact factor is, of course, neither a criterion for exclusion nor a criterion for awarding the prize.)
The award is presented as part of a monthly open competition and is currently accompanied by prize money totaling €5,000 (€1,000 in personal prize money for the first author(s) of the paper and €4,000 for the home institution). The decision on which publication to honor is made by a committee of emeritus professors and senior professors based on qualitative evaluation criteria.
The committee currently consists of: Prof. Jürgen Floege, Prof. Bernhard Lüscher, Prof. Beate Herpertz-Dahlmann, and Prof. Martin Zenke. You can get an impression of the selection process in this video:
